The fascinating “regno del tufo”, with its small and medium sized Etruscan settlements along the hills of the Fiora, can be considered a completion and enrichment of nature and its colors in the Grosseto Maremma. It is a vast hilly area that betrays its volcanic origins in gushing thermal waters. Its environmental and historic characteristics make it one of its kind. The landscape is extraordinarily suggestive: tufaceous layers are broken here and there by thick, green vegetation; rock walls pocked with ancient, mysterious tombs drop sharply to deep valleys; and finally, towns with tower-homes cling to steep slopes with large cellars and grottos creating an incomparable silhouette. Important Etruscan remains stand out in Pitigliano and Poggio Buco (Statonia). There are innumerable artistic and monumental remains scattered throughout the territory, but most especially in Sorano and Sovana. Here the necropoleis were carved in the rock and today their fascination is hightened by the enveloping natural landscape. In Sorano is is possible to visit the monumental tombs such as “Ildebranda”. This is the most famous and is considered the masterpiece of all the tombs. It represents the passage from an archaic Etruria to that which will soon give way to Rome and its empire. The tombs carved in the face of the cliff found near Sorano and Vitozza are also wrapped in thick, protective vegetation. Although spare and unadorned compared to others, they are nevertheless extremely interesting. They were most probably used for raising pigeons or as incinerators and later, in Roman and Medieval times, were converted to living quarters, stalls or cellars.
