This area between the broad Maremma plain and the slopes of Monte Amiata is particularly striking because of its diversity and the way sunny plains, rolling hills and luxuriant forests interweave with each other. Unspoiled nature climbs to the hills in a display of Mother Nature’s creativity and man’s ability to preserve it. Historical landmarks are embraced by the ever varied colors of nature: the tender green of vineyards, the intense green of the uncontaminated and wild Mediterranean scrub, the silver of the olive trees and the gold of the sunflowers. This important natural heritage has been enriched with ancient villages, castles, fortresses and walls which encircle each small town. The colors and odors of the land join the history of this rural civilization in harmony. Thousands of years ago the Etruscans cultivated vineyards and made wine here and this tradition has continued to our day. It has developed into an art by the winegrowers who now produce Morellino, one of Italy’s best known wines. Among forested ravines, reflected in the Ombrone, secluded towns and villages offer rural peace and calm. Scansano and Cinigiano still maintain an old-fashioned way of life we think of with nostalgia. A lone sea of grass precedes Campagnatico, the antique castle of the powerful Aldrobrandeschi family who were the feudal lords of Roccastrada as well. The town and its surroundings look over the wide river valleys of the Ombrone and Bruna. Slender, crenelated towers, ruins and fortified constructions stand out in the festive Maremma landscape as far as the towns around Civitella Paganico, at the province’s border. Each center, however small, in this part of the Maremma proudly conserves its own legends and traditions as important expressions of its ancient past.
