GROSSETO AND CASTIGLIONE DELLA PESCAIA

In the heart of the Maremma, Grosseto is the principal town of the province. The Duomo, the Cassero Senese and the Mura Medicee are architectural representations of the history of the town. Strolling among military, religious and civil monuments it is possible to cover the twelve centuries of Grosseto’s history, discovering, layer by layer, the successive periods and their rulers. It is possible to go back through time in imagination and picture Etruscan vessels navigate Lake Prile, teeming with fish, reaching from the coast to the city of Roselle and submerging the territory of Grosseto. The neigborhood of Grosseto is abundant in historical and artistic wealth. The archeological site of the Etruscan city of Rosella is of particular importance. The digs not only illustrate Etruscan and Roman history, but the historical evolution of Grosseto and the entire Maremma from the beginning to the present. In this ancient land you can find wet lands, rare examples of fauna and uncontaminated flora. The pleasant and prosperous inland preserves features long lost elsewhere. The naturally fertile farmland yields high quality, genuine produce. The sea washes a coast as nature made it. Flowering beaches, sandy dunes, pine forests and brackish marshes succeed one another interspersed by coves hosting charming tourists ports such as Castiglione della Pescaia, Punta Ala and Marina di Grosseto. These ports, such as Castiglione della Pescaia, have developed a large tourist trade without sacrificing their natural features. Castiglione della Pescaia, is among the best known seaside resorts in the country, appreciated both at home and abroad. It is known for its castle and medieval quarter that dominate the town and the canal port. It offers wide, well furnished beaches that reach from Punta Ala to Marina di Grosseto. The latter is becoming ever better equipped as the work to restructure and enlarge the port of San Rocco draws to an end. Approximately 15 km from Castiglione della Pescaia, Punta Ala is one of the best equipped seaside resorts with high quality hotels and a tourist port that is among the most complete and modern in the Mediterranean.
